Fern Valley Camp

Near Cashiers, North Carolina, Workstead’s concept for Fern Valley Camp takes advantage of a bowl-shaped valley in the mountains above Lake Glenville. The current site includes a small guest cottage surrounded by twisting brooks and an assembled landscape of boulders, grasses, trees, flowers, and woods. Our design of the main house can be compared to a ramble—a term that encapsulates Fern Valley Camp in both form and attitude. The building comprises a sequence of gabled volumes on stone plinths, which is meandering in plan. In section, it mimics the topography, as grand and soaring forms are set against spaces that are elevated and intimate. The composition quietly anchors the property at the edge of the bowl, just before the land ascends to a ridge.
